How Domain Names Impact SEO

How Domain Names Impact SEO

There are a lot of questions about Domain Names and the impact they have on business growth. Lately, there seems to be more and more talk about the impact they have on traffic and even business growth.

Let’s bust some of these rumors!

Your Domain does not impact your SEO traffic NEARLY as much as the Meta Descriptions and On-Site SEO. The domain is known as a “Relevancy Signal”, it may relay relevancy, but is not crucial. You think I’m wrong?

What Google Is Looking

Pull up Google Incognito and search for your industry. You will find that every website on the front page has the same characteristic.

– They Have Proper Page Titles
– They Have Strong Meta Descriptions (see image for meta-descriptions)
– They Have Strong Content
– They Mostly look clean and professional

When Google is ranking, they are more focused on the Quality of Your Content than your domain name. Here is what MOZ had to say about it in 2016: https://moz.com/blog/google-fresh-factor-new

Quick Tips for Improving Your Visibility

Here are some quick tips to help improve your Visibility on the Search Engines.

#1. Page Titles.

Name your pages according to your keyword. If you are selling multiple widgets, use sub-pages with page titles with the Widgets Name on them. The relevancy of the URL includes the page title in the URL.
For Example. domain.com/widget

#2. Meta Description.

Make sure all your web pages have Meta Descriptions so Google can match your search and traffic can see exactly what the page is about.

#3. Title Tags.

Review your site structure to make sure your headings have the proper Tag structure (H1, H2, H3, H4 etc.). This helps a lot.

#4. Don’t sacrifice the quality of content for Keyword Stuffing.

Arguably one of the biggest ranking factors for a website is the engagement rate and bounce rate. This tells Google that people are staying on your website and reading (or watching) the content. When you sacrifice content for keyword stuffing you can quickly disengage your audience.

Personal vs Company Branding

Personal vs Company Branding

How to Choose the Right Brand

Every business has a brand. Choosing the right brand for your business is the hardest part. Today we want to tackle the big question of Company vs. Personal Branding and which is best for you.

Why Choose Personal Branding

Choosing to brand yourself is a powerful way to start building your business. This is especially true for service-based but it comes with a burden of no personal privacy online.

We have seen it time and time again where business owners are entangled in business through Messenger or Text to the point they don’t have any privacy. For the type A sales personality, this can be a great option.

Why Choose Company Branding

Company branding is a long-term play that takes more effort to gain traction. This concept of branding is better suited for growth. Without a face behind the company, the focus becomes on building trust through design and content.

Company branding is the best option for a business that has the capacity for growth with a sales and support team. Building a company brand is a great option for more operational and support personality types. It gives you the freedom to build a team around you.

Should You Transition from a Personal to a Company Brand?

The answer is pretty simple. When you need to expand your business and want to make a smoother sales process to a team a company brand is the smarter route to go. It gives you the flexibility of not having to be on every call or be hyper-engaged with every client so you can focus on your business.

Brand Transition Tips

If you are considering changing from a personal brand to a company brand, here are some best practices to make a smooth transition.

1) Make the change, keep your face involved. This could be having your image on the front page of your website, you doing live video’s, and even jumping on a quick 5 to 10-minute call with a client. However fits your situation, the big key is to start making the change in the name.

2) Change your email campaigns. We have all gotten emails from a business owner only to find out it was a newsletter. As you transition your brand, start communicating your message with your brand name. You will have some followers drop off because they want to hear from you – but the reward is you can now use your name in important emails.

3) Push EVERYONE to your website. Lean on your website and sales systems to direct traffic from messenger and social media. Not only will it save you a ton of time and miscommunication, it will also help with your site traffic and SEO.

Creating a Culture that Converts

Creating a Culture that Converts

These past couple weeks Nat and I have been looking for a new vehicle. To most people, this wouldn’t seem like an ordeal, but we have 4 girls and…well we need SPACE! Our girls range from 14 to 8 years old in age which means our life situation will be changing sooner than we would like.

So we set out on a journey for a used Suburban – and I fell in love with a Green Monster of an SUV:

This tank drove great, was clean on the inside, and hadn’t even cracked its potential in miles. I was STOKED! I was so excited about it that I actually talked to a salesperson.

What is about to happen next is not for the faint of heart…

There is a stigma about a used car salesman. The gentleman showing us this magnificent piece of machinery personified it. As I pointed to the Green machine I wanted to add to our family I was meet with “Yeah, we had 4 people drive it today”. Immediately following was the old “someone is going to make an offer on this – do you want to buy it first?”.

Instant red flag for me. I hate people trying to manipulate me so I walked off the lot. Unfortunately for me, this little hole in the wall dealership is right on the normal route. So I sat there and watched this Green bute sit unmoved day after day…for 3 weeks!

Reluctantly, I made my way to the dealership. Armed with the fact that this great vehicle hadn’t moved an inch and took another swing for making it my own.

Things turned from meh to puke
Now, I am sure that if I sat down for drinks with this Salesperson we would hit it off and really connect. That is if he could even remember who I am and what I was looking for.

I have a certain expectation of how I should be treated. It’s not a high expectation. It’s actually pretty dang simple – don’t lie to me. Annnnnd guess what was the first thing out of his mouth…

That Green Suburban, yeah, it’s great and we just lowered the price on it. At this point, feeling a bit cocky, I responded back “No. I drove this 3 weeks ago at the same price.” He went quiet.

This meager attempt to get a sale went on for a bit, and so I skipped to the chase and asked to take it to my mechanic. Seemed reasonable for dropping thousands of dollars cash on a car – right? We had to get permission -_-

Fast forward to returning to the lot. There were a couple issues with this suburban and with all the lies, I was already put off by dealing with this. So I came back, skipped the salesperson, and talked to the deal maker.

I asked if they would work with us on tires and offsetting the cost of some very soon to be issues with the suburban. Their answer was simple – NO. There was no counter offer, not even telling us what they could do. Just no.

We got our family Suburban!

From someone else…and let me tell you something. It was the best experience of ever buying a vehicle.

The Perfect Sales Experience

Still scouring Facebook and Craigslist, Nat and I doubled done our efforts. It had even gotten so severe that we talked about settling for a minivan {shudder}. Then fate struck…

We found a ‘Burb that had some promise. Low miles for the year, clean pics, but it was about 40 minutes away. The first contact was…pleasant. There was no sense of rush, the seller offered to meet us closer and save us some time, it was off to a decent start.

When we finally met the seller face to face and I hate to admit it but fireworks happened. The First thing out of the seller’s mouth alleviated a lot of our fears. It was something that built trust on a very deep level – it went a little like this.

This car has been in our family for years, we don’t need it anymore but we want to make sure a good family gets it.

A little shocked I was a bit taken back by that statement. Here was a family advertising on Craigslist, but didn’t push to make it happen. It is so refreshing to have someone show you what you COULD have – if it’s right for you.

Next, the sellers gave us a report of the maintenance and a comprehensive list of known issues for the car. A little closer to being sold. Then the truth came out…

This seller had a GREAT product that they were incredibly proud of. They knew they had a great price and even took care of a couple minor issues to make it more presentable.

SOLD – Meet Big Red!

We Strive For This Experience

Over the years I have bought and sold my share of vehicles, but this experience resonated with me. Why was it so impactful that I needed to write about it?

This is the kind of experience we strive to deliver.

We make kick-ass, powerful websites. Our content is great and can engage and convert even the toughest of audiences. Analytics and optimization are where our inner geek loves to play. Best of all, the value is there.

I hate sales but we LOVE to help find a need and meet it!

Our promise to you is built into our culture. We will treat you the way we want to be treated. Fairly, as an equal, not talked down to, and with the best that we have to offer. We don’t want to be sold something we don’t need – and we won’t sell you something you don’t need.

If you are looking for a website design and marketing agency to build a long-lasting relationship with, let’s talk. We promise not to sell you, but rather help you find a good fit for your needs!

The 3 Biggest Lessons We’ve Learned

The 3 Biggest Lessons We’ve Learned

I’m going to be a bit more transparent than “professionalism” allows. I am glad that 2017 is over, not that it was a bad year, but it was a hard year. Just like every business, we had some GREAT successes and some HORRIBLE failures. But the biggest success out of the entire year was learning these 3 lessons.

1) Build your business around your passions!

Seems simple enough right? Well, not always. Sometimes in business, new opportunities arise that allows you the ability to stretch your interest and seem exciting. You jump in with full force and effort just to realize that you don’t really like it as much as the other areas you’ve been doing.

This insight comes from the ability to realize that money isn’t my driving force for being an entrepreneur. Mine is happiness. When a project, product, or service steals my happiness then it is time to cut it. So that is what we have done…we cut the things that we are not “as” passionate about to refine our services to make work enjoyable and full of passion. This brings me directly to the 2nd big lesson we learned this year…

2) Don’t Let Ambition Overrun Passion

As an entrepreneur happiness is my “why” and revenue is my scorecard. My problem with this is that I am a highly competitive, which most business owners I have met have these same traits as well (which is why I won’t play monopoly with you). There are opportunities that you could be taking right now that would bring in a nice chunk of money but if we choose to pursue them we would put our business outside of our areas of passion. In other words, we would lose focus of what we truly love and what makes us happy.

3) Don’t Make Deals. Period. But they – NO.

It seems like 99.92% of people you talk to will give you the same dang story about all the people they are going to bring and how they are going to one thing or another if you do this for them…blah, blah, blah.

Here is the hard truth. When you make a deal or discount for your time or services you lose integrity with your clients whether they know about it or not. You also integrity with your team and family because you compromised revenue for a couple of comments on Facebook.

When you have a fair price and a good product you don’t need to make deals. Clients who always want a deal will always want more. This is even more true for “friends” and family. Don’t ever compromise your time to chase a deal to make someone happy with you, because as soon as you draw a line and tell them no they will despise you – no matter what you have done with them in past.

How We Are Changing to Live Up to These Lessons…

You have heard the definition of insanity is to do the same things over and over again, expecting different results. So, we have made a commitment to ourselves, clients, and partners to not be insane! To hold true to this we have taken a very calculated decision to refine our direction as an agency.

Starting January 1st, 2018, we have cut out services that were not profitable and simply didn’t make us happy even they were profitable. This has been such a freeing step in our lives being able to focus more attention on what we are most passionate about.

In fact – we even redesign CustomMarketer.com to reflect our new brand and direction!
